TEKKEN 5 PLAYSTATION 2 PS2
Not only is Tekken 5 a good game (a pleasant reversal for a sagging series), it seems that the PS2 port will turn out excellent. It was a short playtest, but I came away pleased. What does that mean? Your guess is as good as mine. But it seems that you'll have to obtain these items by spending money acquired in one of the bonus modes, which will have action / adventure elements. The characters will now be able to accessorize, just like in VF4. Her lips were sealed, except for these tidbits. Between matches I chatted with Namco's representative, trying to get her to drop some details on the home version's bonus features. This makes him another character I'll be trying in earnest at a later date. Several times I lost approximately half my life to a single throw combo, getting tossed around like a sack of tender vittles. Marduk, Tekken 4's Vale Tudo master, is now simply huge, and his throws are devestating. This time I won, but not without a huge struggle. When my turn came up again, I was facing a Marduk player. I'll definitely be giving Raven a serious look in the future, though. My only mildly controlled button mashing produced some extremely slick, acrobatic moves, some very low to the ground. I decided to try some of the new characters, so I started with Raven, the pseudo-ninja guy who looks like Wesley Snipes. Walls are still in, but they're not as deadly now. This is probably to keep the game speedy and aggressive. After my first game (in which my Julia was cruelly beaten), I noticed that side-stepping seemed a little less effective than it was in Tekken 4. Unlike Tekken 4, you can't move before the round begins. The controls are the same as always, so I had no excuse for losing to Namco's producers and various other event staff. Since every Tekken game's been on a PlayStation, it kind of goes without saying that the game feels natural on the PS2's Dual Shock 2 controller. Another stage is set in a burning building - perhaps the dojo where Heihachi was attacked and presumably killed in the game's intro. It calls to mind Rock's grassy stage in Soul Edge, but eight years of technological progress make Tekken 5's rendition a lot more impressive. One is a moonlit wheat field, with seemingly acres of brush lilting in the wind. The environments in Tekken 5 really impress.
Yep, no more fighting in dingy swamps and empty airport runways. The characters appear beefy and strong, and the backgrounds are beautiful again. The answer? While it looks like some small amount of detail has been lost (I was lucky enough to try the arcade version in September), at this stage I'd say the game looks remarkably good. That being the case, I was keen to see just how well the game ran on the home system. Unlike the older Tekken Tag Tournament, Tekken 5 runs on an arcade board more powerful than the PS2 - System 258. Recently, Namco held a press event where it debuted the PlayStation 2 version of Tekken 5.
TEKKEN 5 PLAYSTATION 2 SERIES
The result is a game that feels more like Tekken 3 than Tekken 4, and that's enough to get me interested in the series once more. So, Namco went back to the drawing board, nipping a few features from Virtua Fighter 4 and returning to a more classical Tekken feel. As you might recall, Tekken 4 met a rather weak reception, and many people consider it the worst of the series. Tekken 5 is just getting around to hitting arcades, and - praise Namco! - the word is good.
